View over to Rennie Bridge and Toll House from Old Bridge Lane in Kelso. The old bridge, originally built in 1754, collapsed in a storm in 1797. The current bridge was built by John Rennie between 1800-03, his first bridge, and thought to be an influence on his design for Waterloo Bridge, London in 1810. A toll was charged until 1854 to pay for the cost of building the bridge.
I love finding pockets of history when I’m out and about.
Graphite on paper
18.5×18.5cm // 29.6×29.6cm with misty grey mount
