Deer in Nara Park, Japan

£125.00

Nara Park is a huge park in central Nara. The beautiful Todaiji and Kofukuji temples are located within the grounds as well as Kasuga Taisha shrine and the Nara National Museum.

It is also home to hundreds of freely roaming Sika deer. Considered to be the messengers of the gods, Nara’s deer have become a symbol of the city and have been designated as a natural treasure. You can purchase bundles of special deer crackers, and many deer have learned to bow to visitors to ask to be fed.

I loved the way that this deer just appeared from behind a prayer stone, didn’t ask to be fed and just enjoyed a lovely moment.

Graphite and charcoal on paper

18×18cm // 32×32cm with charcoal black mount
